Patient centered education can empower patients to manage and advocate for their own healthcare.  My vision as a nurse educator is to engage patients as a partner in their own healthcare and prepare them to self-manage their care with the use of technology.  I also will respect patient’s values and learning needs to provide education on a holistic and individualistic basis.  This means involving patients in the decision making process while being sensitive to patient’s cultural and social needs.  Patients can feel empowered when they collaborate with provider to coordinate care.  I will acknowledge and address any fear or anxiety the patient may be feeling so patient can feel comfortable with advocating for their own health and wellbeing.  It is important to first evaluate the health literacy of patients before developing an educational plan to improve compliance and patient outcomes. Creating education that is patient-centered has the ability to strengthen the nurse-patient relationship and enhance communication.

Patient education and communication can be enhanced with the use of technology.
Patient empowerment is a term used when a patient takes an active role in their own health management.  Nurses can tailor technology use to implement and enhance patient education and empowerment by matching a particular technology to meet the needs of the patient.  Technology in the forms of television, videos, internet, and other electronic devices have changed the way patients receive medical education.

mHealth is a new and exciting technology that stands for “mobile health”.  mHealth includes medical apps that are designed to educate patients about diseases, drugs, and treatments.  Nurses can educate patients on credible and user-friendly apps that provide accurate information and are easy to use.  Medical apps can be designed to provide education for mental wellbeing and chronic disease management.  Apps use sensor technology as a diagnostic tool utilizing cloud connectivity to connect nurses and patients.

Another great technology that is valuable in providing patient-centered care is Telehealth.  Telehealth allows patients and nurses to meet virtually.  This is cost-effective and can reach vulnerable populations that otherwise may not be able to meet in person. Telehealth allows patients see the provider live and receive medical management and online counseling.

When patients feel empowered, they are actively engaged in their care and tend to be more compliant with their medical management.
